No animal has had such an impact on human history as the horse. It all began in prehistoric times, when humans hunted these animals for food. Hunters domesticated horses to provide themselves with meat, and later, mare's milk. For both species, domestication was a watershed event: the horse became the most valuable livestock. The horse's need to travel long distances in search of new pastures forced horse breeders to spread across the Eurasian steppes. To keep up with the long-distance herds, herders learned to ride—and this changed the course of history. Riding made the horse a strategic resource, once as important as oil in the 20th century. It was only when automobiles and airplanes supplanted it that the horse lost this status. Thus came the end of a culture of horse breeding that had endured for four millennia. At the same time, the horse ceased to be the mainstay of human civilization so suddenly and irrevocably that the animal's role in its formation was largely forgotten. The book "On Horseback" tells the remarkable story of the horse and simultaneously offers a new perspective on the emergence of the modern world.
