More than a hundred years have passed since Maxim Gorky wrote his play “The Lower Depths,” but its characters have not disappeared and are still recognizable: homeless people, thieves, prostitutes — people of the “bottom” rejected by society — seem to have moved in time, without losing their problems, from Gorky’s brothel to the streets of a modern metropolis. And the question of the need to choose one’s position remains just as relevant: “Man — it sounds proud!” or “Man should be pitied”? What to choose — a lie for salvation or the bitter truth?

The plays “The Philistines” and “Vassa Zheleznova” show the always relevant conflict between generations and the disintegration of the old way of life against the backdrop of the emergence of a new one.

The book also includes earlier romantic works by the writer: “Makar Chudra,” “The Old Woman Izergil,” “Chelkash,” “The Song of the Falcon,” and “The Song of the Petrel.”

The works are preceded by an article by Vladislav Khodasevich about Gorky
