More than a hundred years have passed since Maxim Gorky (1868–1936) wrote his play "The Lower Depths," but its characters have not disappeared and remain recognizable: the homeless, thieves, and prostitutes—the socially rejected "lower classes"—seem to have traveled through time, their problems intact, from Gorky's brothel to the streets of a modern metropolis. And the question of choosing one's position remains just as relevant: "Humanity—that sounds proud!" or "Man should be pitied"? What should one choose—a white lie or the bitter truth?

The book also includes the plays "The Philistines" and "Vassa Zheleznova," the short stories "Makar Chudra," "The Old Woman Izergil," and "Chelkash," and the prose poems "Song of the Falcon" and "Song of the Stormy Petrel."

The works are introduced by an article about Gorky by Vladislav Khodasevich.
