The hero of the novel "We"—a mathematician and engineer—lives in a gigantic city-state, separated from the outside world by a wall. He believes everything here is well-ordered and rational: people have numbers instead of names, wear identical clothes, and their lives are strictly regulated. But gradually, the hero begins to realize that this perfectly organized society has no place for freedom or love. Written in 1921, "We" was considered a satire on the communist system; it was only in 1988 that Russian readers were able to experience Yevgeny Zamyatin's magnum opus.
