Can modernity be feminine or masculine? Rita Felski's book is an attempt to rethink concepts of modernity shaped by a predominantly male experience. Balancing between historical-cultural and theoretical approaches, Felski analyzes the gender aspects of such key concepts of modernity as nostalgia, consumption, women's writing, popular culture, the sublime, evolution, revolution, deviation, and more. She focuses on men and women writers: from Georg Simmel, Émile Zola, Oscar Wilde, and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch to Rachilde, Marie Corelli, and Olivia Schreiner. How would our understanding of modernity change if we stopped considering the male experience as our primary reference point and instead studied texts written primarily by or about women? This book seeks to answer this question, revealing the diverse and often contradictory connections between femininity and modernity. Rita Felski is a professor at the University of Virginia.
