A Grim Refreshment: Anthropophagy in the Middle Ages
14.99 €
A unique study of medieval human life, which was filled with cruelty and all sorts of dangers: wars, disease, poverty and hunger, pushing people to chilling acts and gruesome crimes. Based on numerous sources, including chronicles, annals, city annals and travel notes, the author tells about the reasons for the anthropophagy that spread in Europe in the V-XVI centuries. This horrifying tradition took root in many spheres of life in medieval society. It helped to fight hunger and also played a key role in medieval medicine; as evidenced by the vast number of pharmacological books and recipes with the mysterious ingredient "mumiyo". Elements of anthropophagy can be found in the medieval punishment system and even in the Christian religion. Angelica Montanari describes a forbidden and often attributed to ancient and "barbaric" cultures, a custom that in fact lurks in the very bosom of European culture.
