There are books that are simply destined for success. Henri Charrière's autobiographical novel "The Moth" became a bestseller immediately after its publication in 1969. In the first three years after its publication, about 10 million copies of the book were printed. Filmmakers were ready to fight for the right of screen adaptation. In 1973, the premiere of Franklin Scheffner's movie based on Charrière's book (starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman), now rightfully counted among the classics of cinema, took place.
The author of this story Henri Charrière, nicknamed Moth (Papillon) in twenty-five years was accused of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. But this is where the most fantastic of his adventures began. At the penal colony in French Guiana, he went through an incredible ordeal, more than once finding himself on a hair's breadth from death. Survival instinct and indomitable desire for freedom helped him to finally find himself on the outside.
