David McClelland is an outstanding American psychologist, the author of the theory of needs and the concept of competence, and a professor at Harvard University. This book examines in detail three basic types of human needs: the need for power, the need for success, and the need for affiliation. Each individual's motivation is based on one or another leading need. The author skillfully describes experiments that provoke the revival of one or another motivational disposition, and proves the universality of the method for discovering these hidden needs developed by him and his staff. McClelland also asks how motivation for high achievement can and does develop.
