Ivo Andrić (1892–1975) is the only Serbian writer to have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novel The Bridge on the Drina, which spans nearly four centuries, from the height of the Ottoman Empire to the early 20th century. The central image, which became fundamental to the entire work, is the bridge over the Drina River in the town of Visegrad. The bridge, like a silent witness, remembers all the times when it united or separated different cultures, faiths, traditions and civilizations – Eastern and Western. In the novel, the author not only describes real events in the history of the region, but also reliably depicts the life and customs of a unique multinational community that developed in the territory of Visegrad and the entire Balkan Peninsula, weaving into the narrative legends and traditions, fairy tales and myths that were born in this unique environment.
