The book "Muscovite: Women of the Soviet Capital in the 1920s and 1930s" by art historians Ksenia Guseva and Nadezhda Plungyan, based on the exhibition of the same name at the Museum of Moscow (2024), explores how the image of the city woman changed in the art of the first post-revolutionary decades. The publication brings together nearly a thousand rare works of painting, sculpture, and decorative and applied art from over 30 Russian museums and private collections. The book's central theme—the union of art and early Soviet industry—is revealed through the dialogue between two female characters.
The first is a textile worker, revolutionary, and activist who became the protagonist of paintings and posters of the 1920s and 1930s. She was the recipient of the leading Soviet women's magazine, "Rabotnitsa," which was initially distributed in factories as a socialist leaflet. The second image is of a Moscow artist whose life was connected to textile production or the early stages of Soviet fashion. Among them are VKHUTEMAS teacher Lyudmila Mayakovskaya, constructivist Varvara Stepanova, Moscow-Parisian Alexandra Koltsova-Bychkova, sculptor Vera Mukhina, and many others.
