Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp was an outstanding Russian philologist, professor at Leningrad University. He was one of the founders of the structural-typological approach in folklore studies, which later became widely used in literary studies. V.Y. Propp's works on the study of folklore entered the golden fund of world science of the twentieth century. In books devoted to the magic fairy tale, V. Y. Propp refuses traditional approaches to the study of oral folklore and turns first to the analysis of structural elements of the genre, and then to its origins, establishing a typological similarity between the magic fairy tale and initiation rites. As the scholar himself wrote, "Morphology" and "Historical Roots" represent, as it were, two parts or two volumes of one large work. The second directly follows from the first, the first is a prerequisite of the second. I am as strictly methodical and consistent as possible moving from the scientific description of phenomena and facts to the explanation of their historical causes". The book "Russian Heroic Epic" (1955) was the first and still the only fundamental study devoted to bylinas. V.Y. Propp undertook their plot, thematic and poetic analysis. This work of the scientist is a kind of a reference book on the Russian epic - from the first Bylin bogatyr Volkh Vseslavievich to the well-known Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya, Vasily Buslaevich and others. In many ways ahead of his time, V. Y. Propp's works have become classics of humanitarian research and have not lost their relevance to this day.
