Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp was an outstanding Russian philologist, professor at Leningrad University. He was one of the founders of the structural-typological approach in folklore studies, which later became widely used in literary studies. V.Y. Propp's works on the study of folklore ("Morphology of the Fairy Tale", "Historical Roots of the Magic Fairy Tale", "Russian Heroic Epic", "Russian Agrarian Holidays") entered the golden fund of the world science of the twentieth century. In the books devoted to the magic fairy tale, V. Y. Propp refuses traditional approaches to the study of the phenomena of oral folk art and turns first to the analysis of the structural elements of the genre, and then to its origins, establishing a typological similarity between the magic fairy tale and initiation rites. As the scholar himself wrote, "'Morphology' and 'Historical Roots' represent, as it were, two parts or two volumes of one large work. The second directly follows from the first, the first is a prerequisite of the second. As strictly methodical and consistent as possible, I move from the scientific description of phenomena and facts to the explanation of their historical causes". In many ways ahead of his time, Propp's works have become classics of humanitarian research and have not lost their relevance to this day.
