Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp (1895-1970) was a folklore scholar, professor at Leningrad University, and the founder of the comparative-typological method in folklore studies. V. Y. Propp became the forerunner of modern structuralism and one of the creators of modern text theory. "Morphology of the Magic Tale" (1928) is the most famous monograph of V. Y. Propp, the first part of the unrivaled classical study devoted to the structure of the fairy tale. On the material of Russian folklore, the scientist identifies the constant and variable elements of the fairy tale. To the permanent he attributes the characters' actions, which are important for the development of the action, - the so-called "functions", to the variables - language style, motivations and attributes of the characters. The diversity of the magic world of the fairy tale is subject to a strict algorithm of functions, which proved to be universal both for Russian folklore with Ivan the Tsarevich and Vasilisa the Beautiful and for European folklore with Rapunzel and Snow White.
