There are few writers in Russian literature whose work is as autobiographical as that of Mikhail Bulgakov—a writer with a complex and bitter fate, who endured the storms of the Civil War, overcame the severe illness of morphine addiction, and experienced both resounding fame and brutal persecution; an artist who countered "unjust tyranny" with the power of deadly irony and sarcasm. "Notes of a Young Doctor" and the novella "Morphine" creatively reflect stories from Bulgakov's life in the Smolensk province, where he served as a zemstvo doctor. "The Extraordinary Adventures of a Doctor" recounts post-revolutionary events in the North Caucasus. "Notes of a Dead Man," also included in this edition, is connected with Bulgakov's work as a playwright at the Moscow Art Theater and was written during a difficult time for the writer, when his plays were banned from production. Many pages of the novel are permeated with Bulgakov's unrivaled sarcasm, and at times even venom, but they cannot hide the author's deepest love for the theater and those who create it.
