Henry Adams (1838–1918), a historian and writer, grandson and great-grandson of US presidents, Pulitzer Prize winner, and Harvard professor, traveled through France and wrote essays on the cultural and spiritual life of the Middle Ages, an era of integrity and technological advancement that far surpassed modern times. In his book, Adams attempts to explain the spirit of the Middle Ages by analyzing its most famous monuments: Mont Saint-Michel and Chartres Cathedral. The austere character of the 11th century, embodied in Mont Saint-Michel, an abbey dedicated to the warlike Archangel Michael, gives way in the 12th and 13th centuries to feminine ideals, expressed in Chartres Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The author devotes particular attention to the cult of the Virgin Mary, the apotheosis of which was the famous stained glass windows at Chartres. According to Adams, this is essentially a parallel religion, centered not on retribution according to merit, but on mercy for sinners through the intercession of the Mother.

The author's synthetic approach to the period under study and the text's unique genre have led critics and historians to classify Adams's poetic journey through three centuries of the European, primarily Norman, Middle Ages as a modernist epic. This is the first time this work has been published in Russian. The text is supplemented by an introduction by medievalist Mikhail Maisuls.
