Irina Velembovskaya always wrote with love and respect about ordinary people who survived a terrible war and were building their lives in the difficult post-war years. But it's unlikely the film would have been successful without Velembovskaya's masterful story.
The main character, Manya, marries not for love, but out of hopelessness and despair. With her husband—a widower, a solid and reliable master—she will feel like she's behind a stone wall. But she yearns to push this wall aside to see the sun, the sky, and freedom.
