In the book "The Lord's Prayer," Metropolitan Veniamin (Fedchenkov, 1880-1961), a prominent hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church and one of the most famous spiritual writers of the 20th century, offers his interpretation of the Lord's Prayer, given to us by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 6:9-13). Explanation of the meaning of the Lord's Prayer is contained in the writings of many holy fathers: St. John Chrysostom, St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Maximus the Confessor, St. Cassian the Roman, St. Tikhon of Voronezh, St. Theophanes the Hermit, and others. St. Ignatius Bryanchaninov also has a work devoted to the Lord's Prayer. However, these works, as Metropolitan Veniamin writes, are often "beyond the capacity of the ordinary believer." On this basis, Metropolitan Veniamin offers his own version of the interpretation of the Lord's Prayer. Metropolitan Veniamin consecutively and in detail examines each word of the prayer, relying on Holy Scripture and the Holy Father's heritage. He writes about faith and God-knowledge in a simple, heartfelt and yet humble manner. Vladyka tells a lot about personal experience, experiences, recalls incidents from his life. "The Lord's Prayer" — a book-talk, on the pages of which there is a live communication between the author and the reader. The book is published from a typewritten copy kept in the library of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy. The text is supplemented with notes and missing references to biblical and liturgical sources.
