The novel "Silence of the Sea" by the French writer Vercors stands among the great books of the 20th century. In 1942, it was secretly published in German-occupied Paris and became one of the symbols of the Resistance. The plot of the book, it would seem, is simple, but behind the external framework of events hides a striking depth of comprehension of life. Silence becomes for the heroes, Andre and his niece Jeanne, a way of resistance to the Nazis and fundamentally changes the German officer, settled in their house. The novel has been screened three times (in 1949, 1954, 2004) and has been the basis of numerous theatrical productions. It is included in the list of the hundred best books of the century compiled by the newspaper Le Monde. Vercors (real name Jean Marcel Bruller; February 26, 1902 - June 10, 1991) was a French writer and illustrator.
