Andrew Taylor is one of the leading contemporary authors of historical crime fiction (The Times). He has won numerous literary awards, including the Crime Writers' Association's Diamond Dagger Award, the Historical Writers' Association's Golden Crown Award, the Barry Award, and the 2013 Ellis Peters Historical Fiction Prize.
The hero of The Silent Boy, Edward Saville, is already familiar to readers from his novel The Smell of Death, although the two stories are completely different. Upon its publication in 2014, the book was named Historical Novel of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times, and was also included in BBC Radio 4's Crime Book of the Year list.
Saville hadn't thought about his wife for years, as they had long since separated. But the news of her horrific death plunged him into disarray: she had been assassinated in a blood-soaked, rebellious Paris. Her ten-year-old son, Charles, had already been smuggled out to England, and at the request of his former patron—who was also his wife's uncle—Saville travels to Somersetshire to retrieve the boy. Upon arrival, it becomes clear that Charles is as mute as a fish. He must have witnessed terrible events; his mother was likely murdered before his eyes, but what terrible secret hangs over him that he can't utter a word? Could someone be wishing him harm? No amount of subterfuge can make him talk; moreover, Saville realizes that even with all his authority, taking the child to London is a daunting task. He tries to befriend Charles, to gain his trust, but the boy suddenly disappears...
