Miles Franklin (1879–1954), a renowned writer and classic of Australian literature, published her first book at the age of twenty. The heroine of My Brilliant Career, the same proud and uncompromising Sybil Penelope Melvin, publishes a novel about her life, after which she is bombarded with all manner of reproaches from family and neighbors, as well as numerous marriage proposals (with suitors ranging in age from 18 to 70). Moreover, Harold Beecham himself—the protagonist of Sybil's book—appears on the horizon! In desperation, the girl flees to Sydney to find understanding and support from Australia's greatest literary figures. However, even in the big city, her "brilliant career" once again suffers a setback...
