Nikolai Pavlovich Zadornov (1909–1992) was the renowned author of historical novels chronicling the exploration of Siberia and the Far East by Russian pioneers, as well as a large-scale cycle about Admiral E. V. Putyatin's voyage to the shores of Japan ("The Saga of the Russian Argonauts"). The novella "Mogusyumka and Guryanych" is among the writer's early works. It is a captivating story about life in the Southern Urals at the end of the 19th century and the friendship between the Russian and Bashkir peoples, represented by two heroes of their time: the noble robber Mogusyum, who struck terror into the hearts of greedy rich people, and the mighty worker Guryan from the Beloretsk plant, who is forced to hide in the Ural forests after murdering his cruel boss. The book offers readers vivid descriptions of the Southern Ural nature and the Bashkir steppe, adventures, love, and important historical events, all presented with meticulous accuracy. It is no wonder that the story “Mogusyumka and Guryanych” is often compared to Leo Tolstoy’s works “Hadji Murat” and “The Cossacks”.
