How does the language of fashion work? Drawing on the ideas of R. Barthes and W. Benjamin, Patricia Calefato examines fashion as a semiotic system made up of bodily signs. The author argues that fashion is constantly in the process of cultural translation, becoming a point of intersection of various languages - not only cinema, literature and music, but also city roads, uniforms and professions.
The first chapters are devoted to the specifics of the formation and functioning of fashion narratives in time (from historical to biographical) and space (from urban to virtual). Then Calefato examines the body as a social subject embedded in the fashion system, and in the final part analyzes how communication technologies have changed the very definition of human corporeality in the public consciousness. From 19th-century urban culture to clothing recycling, from Italian style to plastic surgery and tattoos - this study demonstrates how fashion is tightly connected to a multitude of socio-cultural and natural phenomena.
