Patricia Highsmith (1921-1995) was an American writer, a recognized master of the psychological detective. Highsmith wrote 20 novels and several collections of short stories. Her works were awarded the Grand Prix of French detective literature and the "Silver Dagger" of the Association of Detective Writers of Great Britain; they are included in the list of "100 best detectives" by English writer and critic Henry Keating. Highsmith's work has been a source of inspiration for a host of talented film directors (Alfred Hitchcock, René Clément, Wim Wenders, Liliana Cavani, Claude Miller, Anthony Minghella, Adrian Lyne, etc.), and paved the way for the modern queens of the psychological thriller Gillian Flynn and Paula Hawkins. Fame fell on Patricia Highsmith in 1950, immediately after the release of her debut novel "Strangers on a Train", based on which Hitchcock filmed a progressive noir. Five years later came brilliant and absolutely real in its inhumanity "The Talented Mr. Ripley". Later, four sequels were written. The first film adaptation of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" was René Clément's "In the Bright Sun" (1960) starring Alain Delon in the title role, the second - the novel's eponymous film Anthony Minghella with Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow (1999), and in 2024 on Netflix starts the series "Ripley", the main role in which performed Andrew Scott (Moriarty in "Sherlock" from the BBC). Mr. Ripley is Highsmith's most famous character and favorite anti-hero. Friendly and charming, Tom Ripley carefully hides his true self. In his strange, insular, irrational world of shifting moral values, crime is just a game, a chess game. He justifies himself, and thanks to Highsmith's writing talent, he does so convincingly. From an unhappy boy with a dark past, Ripley gradually turns into a real monster, a cold-blooded killer who cares little about guilt, because the end always justifies the means. All the more so when someone else pays the price. For the first time under one cover - all five novels about Ripley.
