Myths of Ancient India

The plots of the myths of ancient India partly echo ancient mythology. There are tales of the creation of the world by Brahma and the war between the gods and the asuras over the abduction of the beautiful Tara, and stories about the adventures of Indra. The myths explain the structure of the world: why every month Soma, the god of the Moon, becomes thin and fat; why the dragon Rahu devours the Sun and the Moon, which causes solar and lunar eclipses; and why night appeared because of the death of the god Yama. At the same time in the pages of the book one can find references to the biblical story of the Flood.
Despite some similarities with the myths of ancient Greece, Indian myths are original. A significant role in them play holy sages and ascetics, who impose on themselves severe vows, thereby becoming more powerful than the gods. Demons often resort to asceticism. Only through cunning can the gods defeat the insidious asuras and regain their influence over all three worlds.
