Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor A. Yu. Davydov is the first scholar in modern Russian historical scholarship to make the social group of bagmen the subject of academic study. He argues that bagmenism represented a means of survival and a way of everyday life for Russians during periodically destructive periods, when the mechanisms for supplying the population with essential goods were disrupted. The bag, from which this phenomenon takes its name, became the primary means by which millions of our compatriots carried vital food and goods on their backs and shoulders. In his book, A. Yu. Davydov carefully examined the "classic" bagmenism of the revolutionary era of 1917-1922, when all the characteristics of this phenomenon became most apparent. It then became the main—and often the only—occupation for the majority of the population. In those years, the Bolsheviks, having attacked capitalism, attempted to feed the population in a socialist manner (in a centralized manner, from their own hands, without trade). They failed, but the radical revolutionaries also prevented those who refused to starve from self-supplying. A war broke out between state agents and millions of bagmen. The forms of resistance to Bolshevik rule, the twists and turns of their travels, the structure and direction of the bagmen's movement, the size and composition, and the types of "bagmen"—all these questions are explored in this book, drawing on a wide range of sources.
