Few works of fiction can cause such a strong public resonance as Gogol's Dead Souls did in its time. In 1842, when the book came out of print, it became a favorite topic of conversation. Some marveled: "Wonder how it is witty and funny!" Others objected: "In Gogol no one is funny, because in the life and actions of everyone there is truth." But there was no one to whom the poem would have left indifferent. Almost two centuries later, readers who turn to "Dead Souls" realize that the world has changed dramatically, but the man in his essence is not. After all, even today it is easy to meet friendly swindlers chichikovy, barren dreamers manilovy, mean and exuberant nostrils, ignorant and stingy boxes, rude and limited dogkevichy and greedy to manic plushkin. Heroes that were ridiculed by N. V. Gogol and whose types turned out to be as immortal as the great poem written once.
