The publication of the first volume of Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls in 1842 sparked heated debate among his contemporaries, dividing society into admirers and detractors of the poem. "...Speaking of Dead Souls, one can talk a great deal about Russia..."—this judgment by P. Vyazemsky explained the main reason for the controversy and defined the book's special place in the history of Russian literature. Today, no one doubts that we have before us a magnificent work, rightfully included in the golden fund of national classics. Dead Souls is studied in school. However, as an adult, it is worth rereading these familiar pages. Just as 160 years ago, the poem forces the reader to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Gogol's Russia; it provokes a wealth of reflection not only on the past, but also on the present and future of the country. The author's question remains relevant: "Rus', where are you rushing, give me an answer?"
