Mick Herron has been called 'the John le Carré of our time' and the new hope of British literature, and has been compared to Raymond Chandler and Kingsley Amis, Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene, Elmore Leonard and Joseph Heller. Herron's novels are 'funny, bordering on farcical, marvellously cynical caricatures of politicians, functionaries, internecine squabbles and the Great Game' (Booklist), and his heroes ('lame horses', aka the Slough Tower weaklings) are misbehaving counter-intelligence agents punished 'for their addiction to drugs, drink or womanising; for their intrigue and treachery; for their discontent and doubt; and for their unforgivable lapses'. Overseeing them is Jackson Lamb, “a modern-day Falstaff” (Sunday Times) and “one of the most monstrous characters in modern literature” (Bernard Cornwell).
In the second novel in the series, Dead Lions, an old acquaintance of Lamb’s from his time in Berlin, a former informant named Dickie Bowe, dies on a bus outside Oxford; not only does his death look suspicious, but Lamb finds an unsent message on his mobile phone with one word: “Cicadas.” Which means there’s a chance that the mythical deep-cover spy ring might not be so mythical after all. But MI5 has no time for that, counterintelligence is paralyzed by an "audit that is more like the Inquisition," and it is up to Lam and his "lame horses" to deal with the "Ficadas" and their mythical (or is it not mythical?) leader... In 2022, the Slough Tower series was brought to television: the Apple TV+ channel launched a series known in Russian as "Slow Horses." Three seasons have already been released, and there will be at least five in total. Gary Oldman plays Jackson Lam, and the series also stars Jack Lowden, Olivia Cooke, Jonathan Pryce, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Christopher Cheung. The first season was directed by James Hawes ("Merlin," "Black Mirror," "Doctor Who," "The Alienist," "Raised by Wolves").
