Most of the essays were written in English and only a few in Russian. In an interview on the occasion of his Nobel Prize, Brodsky called himself "a Russian poet and an English essayist". Less Than One was published in 1986 in New York and won the National Board of Critics Award in 1986; On Sorrow and Reason was published in 1995 and was Brodsky's last book published during his lifetime.
