This work by renowned literary scholar, Doctor of Philology, and Professor Boris Mikhailovich Eikhenbaum (1886-1959) was first delivered in 1918 as a trial lecture at a meeting of the Faculty of History and Philology at St. Petersburg University. Supplementing it with new material, drawing on the poetry of Zhukovsky and Fet and comparing it with examples from Pushkin, Tyutchev, and Lermontov, the author created "a kind of overview of melodic devices," simultaneously examining the development of melodic devices in 19th-century Russian lyric poetry, along with theoretical analysis. This study will be useful to literary scholars and poetry lovers, as well as, in the author's opinion, music theorists and musicians interested in the melody of verse and intonation in relation to the scientific and artistic problems of musical form.
