In the fall of 1816, John Melmoth, a student at Dublin's Trinity College, arrives at the estate of his dying uncle, preparing to inherit his estate. In the will of the owner of the house, among other things, contains an order to destroy a certain ancient manuscript kept in his study, and to burn the male portrait hanging above the office with the inscription "J. Melmoth, 1646", the original of which, according to the dying words of the old man, is still alive ... So begins one of the most exciting and frightening books in the literature of romanticism - "Melmoth the Wanderer" (1820) by the English writer Charles Robert Metjurin. This original philosophical novel and one of the brightest examples of European Gothic prose tells about the tragic fate of an Irish nobleman of the XVII century, who, being obsessed with the "boundless desire for forbidden knowledge", sold his soul to the devil and gained the gift of omniscience, foresight and supernatural longevity - a gift that became his curse. In the perception of subsequent generations of readers, Metjurin's book, having transcended the narrow limits of the "scary" genre, became a recognized masterpiece of world literature.
