Does an artist who swears an oath to a criminal power become an accomplice to its atrocities? Is he responsible for the murders that are committed on the orders of his high patrons? The novel "Mephisto" - one of the most famous in the work of German writer Klaus Mann (1906-1949). The eldest son of Nobel laureate Thomas Mann, nephew of another prominent novelist - Heinrich Mann, a talented representative of the family, which is considered the most influential in the history of Germany XX century, Klaus Mann was forced in 1933 to go into exile, where his novel about society, with incredible speed rushing into madness. The picture of free Germany of the late 1920s - with the blossoming of dance culture, a multitude of theaters and cabarets, freedom of speech and a variety of political parties - is replaced by a description of the 1930s - the time of the formation of the dictatorship of Nazism. Culture in the new Germany is governed by politicians and officials alien to art and humanity, the general atmosphere is saturated with fear and betrayal, only one point of view remains true, the rest is punished as dissent. The central character of the novel, the actor Hendrik Hefgen, like the famous hero of world literature, whose role he plays on stage, faces a fateful decision: to gain fame and prosperity, but to lose his own soul. Almost a hundred years separate the action of the novel from our days, and the events unfolding on the pages of the book, have not lost their significance and relevance.
