The Mediasphere of Viking Poetry
29.99 €
The author examines the position of poetry in the media system of Medieval Scandinavia over the course of 500 years of the skaldic tradition. The medium of skaldic poetry emerged around the beginning of the Viking Age, taking its place among the many means of aristocratic self-presentation in memorial monuments, objects of fine art, and warrior culture. The book examines how texts composed by kvidhutt recount stories of destruction and loss, skaldic ekphrasis reveal the presence of the gods, and songs of praise composed by drottkvett recreate the soundscape of battle.
