Joseph Roth (1894–1939) was a distinguished Austrian writer and a classic of 20th-century world literature. Stefan Zweig wrote that Joseph Roth "had a Russian nature, I would even say a Karamazov nature; he was a man of great passions" and "was characterized by a Russian depth of feeling, a Russian fervent piety." The Radetzky March is the story of three members of the von Trotta family, devoted servants of the Austrian crown, and the collapse of the Habsburg world and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The novel is written in the realistic tradition, but is imbued with subtle humor and irony.
