Evgeny Semenovich Steiner is a Japanologist, PhD in Philology, and Doctor of Art History. He worked at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and taught and conducted research at universities in Moscow, Jerusalem, Tokyo, Yokohama, New York, Manchester, and London. Since 2012, he has been a professor at the School of Oriental Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (Moscow). He is the author of 15 books published in Russia, the USA, the UK, and Germany. His book, Hokusai's Manga: An Encyclopedia of Old Japanese Life in Pictures (St. Petersburg: Petersburg Oriental Studies, 2016, 4 volumes), won the 2017 Book of the Year and Enlightener (special nomination) awards.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was one of the most famous Japanese artists of the Edo period. Throughout his life, he published albums of engraved drawings entitled "Manga." In fifteen volumes containing four thousand figures and motifs, Hokusai presented an encyclopedia of old Japan in pictures—from the gods and heroes of antiquity to contemporary love affairs, household utensils, and diverse natural scenes. Japanologist Yevgeny Steiner's book is a complete and thoroughly annotated "Manga" publication, unparalleled in the world for its comprehensiveness of illustrations and historical commentary. The author is convinced that cultural and historical explanation is indispensable in many cases.
"Hokusai's Manga," although written not in hieroglyphs but in "picture writing," requires translation—from the language of Japanese historical and mythological narratives, as well as from the foreign cultural realities of two hundred years ago. The book will become a reference book and will be of interest to all art lovers, enthusiasts of Japanese culture, as well as professional Japanologists and Sinologists.
