This book is the first Russian-language compilation of five minor Greek mythographers—authors who, in classical antiquity, systematized, explained, and retold myths from unusual perspectives. Parthenius, Antoninus Liberalis, Libanius, Dictys of Crete, and Palaephatus offer readers a unique perspective on the Greek mythological tradition, far removed from the classical poems of Homer and Hesiod.
Unlike conventional retellings, these texts allow us to see myth as a living tool for explaining the world—from its literal interpretation (Dictys, who allegedly witnessed the Trojan War) to the debunking of fictions (Palaephatus, who proves that monsters and miracles are the result of misunderstandings). Parthenius's collection, dedicated to the disastrous consequences of passion, and Antoninus Liberalis's Metamorphoses, which preserves many rare stories, complete the picture. Collected for the first time under a single cover, these works demonstrate how ancient culture simultaneously admired, reworked, and questioned myth.
The publication includes: Russian translations of all five authors; introductory articles illuminating the history of the mythographic genre and the fate of each of the presented texts; philological and historical-cultural commentary revealing obscure passages, allusions, and literary context.
The book is addressed to classical philologists, historians of ancient culture, students of the humanities, and anyone interested in little-known aspects of Greek mythology.
