Martin is only eleven, but he has seen a hundred years' worth of troubles and sorrows. Left without parental love and care, he grows up in an empty hut on the edge of the village with only a black rooster. The villagers shun the boy, believing his rooster to be the embodiment of unclean powers, but are not averse to using him as a laborer. "All his life Martin has heard stories of a knight in a black cloak who kidnaps children. Always one boy and one girl. And those children were never seen again." One day this black knight kidnaps a girl in front of his eyes, and Martin decides to find the missing children and put an end to this evil. He leaves the village with a traveling artist and, embarking on an odyssey, discovers not only the depths of human souls, but also his own abilities. The Boy with the Black Rooster, the debut novel by contemporary German author Stefanie von Schulte, is a hauntingly dark parable about growing up, loneliness and humanity set in an apocalyptic medieval setting.
