In 1936, the novel "False Nero" was published in Amsterdam, a work by the outstanding German writer Lyon Feuchtwanger, who had shortly before published the first and second parts of the epic "Trilogy of Josephus Flavius". The plot, touched upon in the process of working on this monumental historical canvas about the ancient Roman historian of Jewish origin, inspired Feuchtwanger to devote a separate novel to the story of the potter Terence, who declared himself miraculously saved Emperor Nero. To this day, this compact, almost accidental novel remains one of the favorites in Feuchtwanger's oeuvre for many of his admirers. The novel "Jeffai and his daughter", also included in the collection, in many ways the pinnacle of Feuchtwanger's work. In it, the Jewish theme, more or less explicitly expressed in most of his works, resounds once again. But, in addition, this novel - the fruit of many years of reflection on the fate of the biblical Jephthah, which struck the author as a child, about the tragic confrontation of man fatal coincidence of circumstances. The novel "Jephthah and his daughter" was published a year before the death of the writer.
