Familiarity with Japanese folklore reveals to us the true character of the traditions of the Land of the Rising Sun. Russia has always been interested in the culture of Japan. At the end of the XIX century, several Russian writers began translating folk tales. They, by their own admission, "chose the most suitable - understandable - to Russian fairy tales". For the first time, the translations, many of which remain exemplary even today, are collected under one cover. The book is decorated with drawings by Kobayashi Eitaku (1843-1890), specially created for the publishing project of Hasegawa Takejiro (1853-1938), which was a great success in the New World - traditional books of tirimen-bon.
