The Russian émigré writer and naturalist Nikolai Apollonovich Baikov (1872-1958), widely published in Japan and other countries, was an officer in the Chinese Eastern Railway's Security Guard, author of the famous "Great Wang," and V.K. Arsenyev's counterpart in Manchuria. He lived in China for half a century and is buried in Brisbane, Australia. Until the early 1990s, he was known in his homeland only to a small circle of literary scholars and readers.

Nikolai Apollonovich Baikov completed his book of essays, "People and Animals," which we are publishing in this volume of the Collection, in the final years of his life, already in Australia.
