David Herbert Lawrence is one of the most famous English writers of the early 20th century, the author of Women in Love, Sons and Lovers, and many others. However, it was the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover that brought Lawrence his greatest success and his most bitter disappointment. The intensity of passions and the vividness of the love scenes in the book were perceived as a challenge to society. Immediately after its publication in 1928, the book was banned, and the finished print run was confiscated and destroyed. Only in 1960, after a high-profile trial that shook the whole of England, the novel was rehabilitated and returned to the shelves of bookstores. Today, Lady Chatterley's Lover has taken an honorable place among the best examples of European prose.
