Giacomo Girolamo Casanova was born in 1725 to a dancer and an actress. A holder of a law degree, a military man, a violinist, and the author of a considerable number of literary works, including the philosophical and fantastic novel Icosameron, the three-volume work History of the Troubles in Poland, and Translation of the Iliad in Rhymed Octave, Casanova gained eternal fame thanks to other achievements, known to us from the memoirs in which he laid out the story of his life.

The Memoirs of Giacomo Casanova, Chevalier de Seingalt, Written by Himself were first published a quarter of a century after the author's death, in 1822–1828, in German translation. The book was a resounding success, which contributed to its publication in France and then in other countries. Casanova's adventures, especially his love ones, became widely known, and his name became a household word.

This book presents selected fragments of the multi-volume autobiography of the "great seducer", as well as famous illustrations by the French artist Auguste Leroux (1871-1954), created for the complete French edition of 1931-1932.
