As Osip Mandelstam's widow put it, love poetry occupied a "limited place" in the poet's oeuvre, yet he himself considered these few works to be the best of all he wrote. Oleg Lekmanov's book centers on the connection between eroticism and poetry: the author analyzes all of Mandelstam's poems, identifying marker words traditionally used not only to embody the theme of love but also to represent female attractiveness. Combining a biographical method with a motif-based analysis of Mandelstam's poetry, exploring its evolution and elucidating details related to the poems' recipients, Oleg Lekmanov offers a fresh perspective on familiar texts and reveals something new within them that has previously eluded scholars.

Oleg Lekmanov is a Doctor of Philology, a visiting professor at Princeton University, and the author of the first monographic biography of Mandelstam and numerous works on his poetics.
