When ancient artists decorated the walls of palaces and temples with flowers, and ancient poets sang the praises of the grapevine, when myths and legends were composed about the goddesses of spring—the Italian Flora or the Scandinavian Freya—covering the earth with flowers, botany had not yet been invented. By the beginning of the 17th century, the science of botany had matured, still life had acquired the status of an independent genre, and society became fascinated with the symbolic language of flowers. And in the following century, the Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus gave names to all the inhabitants of the plant world.
This book is dedicated to them.
