Vladimir Gurkin was born in Perm Krai in the family of a tractor driver. In 1971 he graduated from the acting department of the Irkutsk Theater School, in 1983 he moved to Moscow, where he worked in the theater "Sovremennik" and in the Moscow Chekhov Art Theater.
