The work of Junichiro Tanizaki (1889-1965) is widely known not only in Japan but also throughout the world. His works have been translated into many languages, and his novels have been made into movies in Europe. The finest stylist, unsurpassed master of literary allusions, bold experimenter, he was never afraid, and often sought to shock the reader - the publication of some of his works caused a strong public reaction up to the debate in the Japanese parliament to ban them as immoral and pornographic. The novel "Wormwood Lover" (1928) occupies a special place in the legacy of Tanizaki. The hero of the novel is a man living in a complex time of broken epochs, a man full of contradictions and dissonances, trying to reconcile traditional culture and the rapidly growing influence of Western modernization.
