The Livonian War of 1558–1583 is traditionally considered the longest in Russian history. However, modern Russian historians are gradually coming to the conclusion that this term refers not to one but to several distinct military conflicts. One of these is the Russo-Swedish standoff in the Baltics, the course of which is considerably less known than the struggle between the Russian state and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland. Meanwhile, Sweden, taking advantage of Russia's dire straits, captured the cities of Yam, Koporye, Ivangorod, and Korela, along with the surrounding districts. To recapture these lands, Russia was forced to take up arms again seven years later.
Historian S.N. Biryuk's new book provides a detailed account of the events of the Russo-Swedish War of 1570–1583.
