Pavel Dmitrievich Bryantsev taught history at a secondary school for several years and noticed how attentively his students listened to the explanations of sections of Russian history dealing with Lithuania and its relations with Poland and Russia. Due to his interest in the topic and the lack of necessary sources, Bryantsev decided to write a history of the Lithuanian state himself. He spent seven years on this project: he reviewed numerous sources and textbooks, selected only the most important and significant events, and combined them into a single, comprehensive picture of the history of the Lithuanian state.
