The Muromachi period (1336–1573) is considered perhaps the darkest and most unproductive period in Japanese history. While not entirely neglected by historians, it lags far behind the periods preceding and following it, not to mention more recent times. This book by renowned Japanologist Alexander Prasol, through its in-depth examination of primary sources, expands our knowledge of how the authors of the few surviving literary works from this period perceived and described the events of their time. This publication contains the first translation in Russian Japan studies, complete with brief descriptions and detailed commentary, of three literary works compiled in the 14th and 15th centuries: the military chronicle Oeiki (Record of the Oei Years), the family admonition Nantaiheiki (Flaws in the Tale of the Great Peace), and the military chronicle Oninki (Record of the Onin Years). This richly illustrated book gives the reader a closer look at some of the little-known realities of Japanese life during the Muromachi period.
