Most of the battleships built by the leading naval powers in the 1930s and 1940s bore the seal of the Washington Treaty of 1922, an international agreement that limited the development of strategic weapons for the first time in history. "North Carolina" and the similarly named "Washington" were the first American battleships laid down after a 16-year "vacation". The Americans adhered to the same tactics in the future, breaking the back of the Imperial Navy, and "North Carolina", having received 15 battle stars for valiant participation in the most important battles of 1942-1945, went down in history as the most titled battleship of the U.S. Navy.
